SUNLIGHT Recycling, owned by Panos Germanos, won the Gold award in this year’s Environmental Awards for its outstanding contribution to environmental protection and sustainability, which is achieved with the operation of Europe’s most technologically and environmentally modern Lead-acid Battery recycling unit, in Komotini.
SUNLIGHT-Recycling-Kopolas-AwardDuring the ceremony that took place on 15 December at the Intercontinental Hotel in the presence of significant representatives of the business world and the energy industry, SUNLIGHT Recycling stood out by winning the highest position in the category: Recycle – Reuse.
The General Manager of SUNLIGHT Recycling, Mr. Spyros Kopolas, stated: “the golden distinction constitutes the active confirmation of the value generated by SUNLIGHT Recycling to Greece and the environment, by raising the bar in the recycling sector for our country. Our goal is for the new unit in Komotini to serve as a point of reference throughout Europe in terms of the environmental features and practices it applies”.
SUNLIGHT Recycling, which constitutes the Lead-acid Battery Recycling Branch of SYSTEMS SUNLIGHT S.A., creates multiple economic and environmental benefits, both for the company itself and for domestic economy, such as the creation of 50 new jobs, the contribution to the achievement of the country’s environmental goals and the decrease in the foreign exchange outflow by €40m.
More specifically, SUNLIGHT Recycling focuses on the collection of used batteries, the recycling thereof based on international quality standards and the utilization of recycled products for the manufacture of new batteries in Greece by SYSTEMS SUNLIGHT. With a recycling capacity of 25,000 tons of used batteries per year, SUNLIGHT Recycling constitutes the first holistic lead battery recycling approach in Greece, by utilizing the most modern plant in Europe in technological and environmental terms.
